1. What is something not too many people know about you?
Most people don’t know that for my first year of college (at Gallaudet University, a school for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing), I was enrolled in several French classes during which I would speak in French with professors while simultaneously signing in American Sign Language for other students.
Most people also don’t know that I lost my hearing from the chemotherapy used to combat my childhood cancer, not from tumors themselves growing in my ears or anything like that.
Finally, most people don’t realize I can still tune instruments and have a decent singing voice.
2. What are your biggest passions?
My biggest passions are social justice, anything foreign, equal access, animal rescue, the arts and history, statement jewelry (ha), languages, and coffee. I wouldn’t necessarily mind being in school forever.
3. What are your goals for the future?
I spent a lot of time when I was younger staying silent when I should’ve spoken up for/been proud of myself, so I’m dedicated now to speaking out against injustice anywhere I see it, even if it is uncomfortable and inconvenient. It is also a life goal of mine to travel and see as much of the Earth as I can.
4. What is your definition of success?
My definition of success is a life of serenity and selflessness. I also hope to publish many creative works of art and to volunteer as much as I can with animal rescue and humanitarian groups. I feel I’m at my most successful when I’m not letting my ingrained fear hold me back from exploring what I know interests me or from being altruistic, which may prove to be unnerving at first, but is always worth it.
5. Tell us something about the projects you're working on.
I’m currently working on translating a popular song into Sign Language on video as well as planning on photoshoots with several local small business owners to showcase handmade, locally-sourced products. Soon, I hope to feel confident enough to share my poetry in my posts.
