1. What is something not too many people know about you?
Stark isn’t my real last name. I don’t have a last name. Arief Stark was initially my nickname as I was a huge fan of Tony Stark (Iron Man). But as I grew up I realised that I’m not just a fan, but I look up to him even though he is a fictional character. The reason behind it is deeper than it seems. I was born with heart condition called AVSD, basically, I have a hole in my heart which limits the efficiency of my heart to 50% (a regular person is 85%). Long story short, I’ve always wondered how it would be like to have the heart of a normal person and what it’s like to live a day without being breathless after 5 mins of walking or constantly being tired, or not having a resting heart rate of 100bpm. Tony Stark is able to build a suit and a device which allows his heart to function normally and be stronger than he originally was. So I hold on to that hope that it is possible to have a heart that is not weak and failing. And that’s why I kept the name Arief Stark.
2. What are your biggest passions or hobbies?
My biggest passion is creating. When it comes to photography I will try to create with my camera, when it comes to design I will create by drawing or sketching or creating something in photoshop or illustrator. Although I’m mostly known through my photo work, my major is graphic design and ultimately I want to design for a living. My biggest hobbies used to be sports (I used to play a lot of soccer and tennis and cycling) but I realise that all this physical activity is endangering and worsening my condition so I had to stop all that and that’s why I picked up photography and design. So right now, my biggest hobby is taking photos of my favorite bands and artists. There is no other feeling than being in the photo pit at a concert and it’s just me, my camera, the artist, the crowd and the music. That is my sanctuary.
3. What are your goals for the future?
My short term goal is to create something that either tells my story or tells someone else’s story. My long term goal is to create for a living. Photography, videography, art and design are just tools that will help me to create.
4. What is your definition of success?
Some people will say that success is achieving your goals and dreams, etc. But for me, success means being a genuine human being. It is important to remember who you are and to not lose yourself in the pursuit of achieving your goals and dreams. I have seen so many people being lost in the journey of achieving success and their pursuit of their goals. And it’s easy for people to do that because of all the temptations and distractions around them (money, following count, fame etc.) so to be able to push all this away while pursuing your goals, and be true to yourself, that is success to me.
5. Tell us something about the projects you're currently working on.
All I can say right now is that the projects I’m working on currently are mostly graphic design based and less on photography. So expect to see more of my design work!
